FEDERATION - Trilogy Book One - FEDERATION takes close encounters to a whole new level. A galactic empire of a quarter of a million worlds stumbles across the Earth. When they ask, "Take me to your leader", the world is thrown into panic. We have no world leader, only many who might like to be. With elements of a political thriller, there is an intriguing storyline which addresses the environmental and myriad social problems faced by the world today.

The aliens’ philosophy on life is totally unexpected. With the help of intelligent automatons, they've turned what many on Earth believe to be a reviled political system into a utopia for the masses, but are they a force for good or evil, and will the wealthy make the compromises needed for a successful outcome?

The story is told by a Daragnen university graduate, Yol Rummy Blin Breganin. He discovers that Earth failed in its attempt to join the Federation, and, for some unknown reason, Federation members are forever banned from visiting or contacting the planet. Rummy had never heard of a whole world being outlawed. Perhaps it would be sensible to leave well enough alone but no, he decides to investigate…

FEDERATION is the first in a trilogy of near-future, hard (almost) science-fiction novels by Tony Harmsworth, the First Contact specialist.

The Federation brings with it, intelligent robots, manufactured in huge numbers and employed to carry out every task known to humankind. The implication is that they can do everything people can do and will make everyone redundant in the way that computers replaced typing pools and milkmaids were replaced by automatic milking parlours. These, robots, however, can also do the job of everyone else - all supervisors, managers, engineers, plumbers, builders, programmers - everyone is unemployed.

Millennia ago, this caused the Federation worlds to fall in to poverty. The only people with money owned the robot companies. Economies collapsed. Eventually the Federation discovered the solution, but it appears to be a form of communism. How will the world react?

So, the result is that some "hard-right-wing" supporters really hate this book. They think I am somehow targeting them. All I am doing is telling a story in a particular way. I certainly don't wish to take your money unfairly, so, if you like that form of politics, please consider my other titles instead or read this book's reviews on Amazon to see what others are saying before buying. Most people thoroughly enjoy it and give it great reviews, so it is only a few narrow-minded individuals who cannot see that it is only a story.

GENUINE AMAZON REVIEWS

I have included some of the bad reviews in red to show how irrational some readers have been. They seem to not realise that this is a story!

Review from AmazonCom: 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

Very relevant story that captures the predictable responses to earth’s contact with aliens. I deeply enjoy reading this book and can’t wait to read the sequel.

Review from AmazonCom: 1.0 out of 5 stars Manifesto or science fiction? Hard to tell

An interesting storyline but a bit oversimplistc and made intolerable by the incessant hammering of personal political and social viewpoints. Evil Americans... just so fresh and original! The whole story line is one long anti-capitalist (read American) diatribe. Yawn. Author's observation - It's a story, stupid! I have large numbers of American friends. Mind you, I still can't believe Trump managed to get to power. TH

Review from AmazonCom: 5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and important

Science fiction on the scale of Asimov's "Foundation" stories, this novel captures the current era with crystal clarity. The writing is brilliant; the characters, alien as they are, are portrayed convincingly; and the story is deeply touching.

Review from AmazonCoUk: 5.0 out of 5 stars Federation book one

An excellent Sci-fi thriller, intelligently and realistically told, it highlights humankind's shortcomings when confronted with a benign galactic empire that offers a form of utopia that eliminates hunger, poverty and war if the Earth were to join. I personally could not put it down until I had finished the last page. I cannot wait to start the second book in the trilogy. This is an excellent book by an author with a style and imagination similar to that of Asimov and Clarke.

Review from AmazonCoUk: 5.0 out of 5 stars Read this is what us humans are really like.

Can you imagine how us humans would react feel if ambassadors from the Federation had the bare-faced temerity to ask if we'd like to join them? What? We, at the top of the food chain? Is it not us who do the inviting? And we don't invite, we liberate - history shows that we've always 'liberated.' But discreetly, you understand. Keeps the status quo.

Very few writers have taken on this subject but Arthur C Clarke's Childshood's End is a good example: wait a generation whilst making your prescence obvious and then subjugate - it's the best ploy.

Yet Tony Harmsworth takes us to planets that have already joined the Federation and we additionally find out how societies manage with equality!

For me this book is excellent and I've just re-read it before getting the second in the trilogy.

Review from AmazonCom: 1.0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time with this book

I can not suggest strongly enough that no one should ever read Federation by Tony Harmsworth. It is at the top of the worst books I have read in the last 65 years of reading. The three pages of anti gun tantrum in the middle of the book brought me as close to deleting it as any book I have read. Space aliens show up on Earth and promise to turn Earth into a paradise. No hunger, no poverty. You just have to tear up the Bill of Rights, hand over any money over $40k,and every type of weapon. That includes all guns, knifes, swords bows and arrows, and more. I will not read the rest of this series. Nor will I read anything this writer has to say. Don't waste your time!. Author's observation - I guess this guy is one of those who doesn't understand that guns don't kill, but people with guns do. To want to be able to carry weapons when robots make violence and crime a thing of the past, seems bizarre. Why can't these people understand that they are reading speculative fiction? TH

Review from AmazonCom: 5.0 out of 5 stars A very original concept.

This book took the idea of first contact and turned the situation around from the usual 'defense against the aggressor' plots. In this book the Federation inspectors are assessing Earth's readiness to join them. I won't spoil it for you by telling you any more. Sufficient to say that given the situation set up by the plot, the development of it is very believable. I'm waiting impatiently for the next installment.

Review from AmazonCom: 1.0 out of 5 stars Not a very enjoyable book to read

Not a very good book to read. I read from beginning to end. The author of this book is obvious has political views that throughout history has proven time and time again that socialism doesn't work and a failed system. If there was an option to use 0 stars I'd actually use that one, but there obviously isn't. I chose this the lowest rating because this supposed science book is nothing but political in nature. Very little science fiction in it. I didn't like the book because it was left leaning in it's political spectrum. If i was a betting person and i am. Anyone that has political views about socialism, communism, any views about a totalitarian state is positive would find this book an enjoyable read. It took me a week to read this book, and i normally read books in a day or two. I had to put it down on multiple occasions. Author's observation - so all of the socialist governments of the UK and Europe have never worked? Talk about blinkered. As for SF, the trilogy is full of aliens, technology, spaceflight, alien worlds and alien creatures. TH

Review from AmazonCoUk: 5.0 out of 5 stars Human interaction with more advanced aliens

This novel does, unfortunately, present a believable view of how humans would react to the arrival of aliens who are in a far more advanced state. They offer Earth the chance to join their Federation, but the requirements don't fit with human expectations. They show how everything works and the Earth leaders accept this, but getting acceptance back home is harder to achieve.

The events play out fairly predictably and is a sad reflection on human life these days, but a gripping story all the same.

How humankind reacts to the events in this first book will make a fascinating story in the second, which makes that a "must read".
